Recent Awards

Patient Care & Advocacy
The Lupus Center of Excellence received the inaugural appreciation award from The Lupians patient care and advocacy group based in Youngstown, Ohio, for the service it has provided to many lupus patients from that area.

Elaine Scanlon, patient information coordinator and concierge, received the 2008 Distinguished Patient Ambassador Service Award from University of Pittsburgh Physicians. She is one of only two award recipients selected from among more than 200 practices.

Leadership
Lisa Gundel, Center administrator, was selected by UPMC senior leadership to participate in UPMC’s first Leadership Development Intensive beginning in June 2008. The year-long developmental program, supported in part by Beckwith Institute for Innovation in Patient Care, continues the legacy of supporting leadership development at UPMC. She was one of only 25 selected candidates.

Linda Santelices was nominated for the Women in Technology Rising Stars award by Alaine Allen, director of the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering’s EXCEL program. Santelices awaits word later this year on the award reserved for women under 30 who have made significant contributions in science and technology. Furthermore, Santelices was asked by Dean Sylvanus Wosu to serve on the school’s diversity council. She joins the 15-member committee of engineering faculty, alumni, and community leaders. In addtion, she delivered the keynote address at the EXCEL Awards Ceremony in summer 2007.

Research
Jennifer Elliott, MD, received a $150,000 research grant from the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation to study “Progression and Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.” Dr. Elliott also received an F32 Postdoctoral Training Award in the amount of $174,474 from the National Institutes of Health.

Sarah Rutman, clinical research coordinator, was featured in the Study Coordinator Spotlight in the December 2007 issue of Genentech’s newsletter. She was recognized as the highest recruiter for the previous month.

Amy Kao, MD, MPH, received a $100,000 research grant from the Pittsburgh Foundation for her project titled “Platelet C4d as a Biomarker and Mechanistic Clue for Cognitive Dysfunction in SLE.”

Surabhi Agarwal, MD, a rheumatology fellow mentored at the Lupus Center of Excellence by Amy Kao, MD, MPH, and Susan Manzi, MD, MPH, has received the prestigious Paul Caplan Fellow Research Award for best research protocol from the University of Pittsburgh for 2008. The $5,000 award will fund Dr. Agarwal's study of "Reticulocytes Bearing C3d and C4d in Patients Hospitalized for Acute Infections."

Editorship
Joseph Ahearn, MD, Center co-director, was asked to serve as executive editor of Clinical and Translational Science, a new medical journal that launched in 2008.

Susan Manzi, MD, MPH, Center co-director, served as guest editor of the Best Practice & Research Clinical Rheumatology journal.
