About the Center

Growth of the Center
Since its establishment, the Lupus Center of Excellence has attracted a team of more than 30 individuals who are supported by grants and contracts amounting to more than $2 million annually.

In July 2003, the Lupus Center Outpatient Facility relocated to Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC, a nationally recognized leader in women's health.

October 2004 marked the grand opening of the Patient Care and Translational Research Center of the Lupus Center of Excellence, a 6,000-square-foot facility that provides comprehensive care for lupus patients via a team of multidisciplinary physician-scientists available within the Center itself.

The Center has continued to expand, joining forces with UPMC Cardiovascular Institute to investigate the mechanisms causing cardiovascular disease in lupus patients.

The Center also partners with Cellatope, a start-up company that is developing lupus biomarker technology discovered in the Center's research laboratories. The unifications among these specialized physician-scientists instill a strong sense of certainty that a cure for lupus is well within reach.
