2008 American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting
Physician-researchers from the Lupus Center of Excellence presented their work at the 2008 American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting in October in San Francisco. Jennifer Elliott, MD, shared her research "Carotid Intima-media Thickness and Plaque Predict Future Cardiovascular Events in Women with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus." Kimberly Liang, MD, who joined the Lupus Center in September 2008, presented her abstract on "Diastolic Dysfunction in Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients" done during her fellowship at Mayo Clinic. Carol Greco, PhD offered her perspective on "Systemic Lupus: Disease Burden and Comorbidities."
Joseph Ahearn, MD
Joseph Ahearn, MD, Center co-director, has been invited to speak about lupus research developments across the country and around the globe — venturing as near as New York City and Detroit and as far as Greece and Norway.
Amy Kao, MD, MPH
Amy Kao, MD, MPH, Lupus Center rheumatologist, hosted an online chat in February 2008 as a guest of the Lupus Foundation of America, fielding questions from patients. Susan Manzi, MD, MPH
Susan Manzi, MD, MPH, co-director of the Lupus Center of Excellence, was a guest in fall 2007 on the syndicated radio show "Patient Power," which airs nationwide on Sunday mornings. Following the “Uncovering the Secrets of Lupus” segment, during which she fielded calls from patients, the switchboard lit up with callers who wanted to hear more. As a result, Dr. Manzi was asked back to do a full hour on lupus less than a week later.
This year alone, Dr. Manzi has completed 11 visiting professorships in the United States and traveled abroad to Germany, Norway, England, and Amsterdam to deliver four more. She also participated in 13 seminars and workshops nationwide. Kathleen McKinnon, DO
Earlier this year, Kathleen McKinnon, DO, Lupus Center rheumatologist, was invited to India to address the Indian Rheumatology Association Vasculitis Group (IRAVAS) meeting about “Takayasus Arteritis and Applicability of Proposed Disease Activity Indices in U.S. Population.” She also visited Christian Medical College, in Vellore, Channai to discuss a similar research topic.
Jeannine Navratil
Jeannine Navratil, senior research associate, was invited to present “Complement Component C4d Associates with Platelet Microvesicles: Clues to the Vascular Complications of Lupus” at the biannual International Society for Analytical Cytology meeting in Budapest, Hungary, in May 2008. The meeting’s focus is on varied methods of studying cells. Navratil discussed the use of flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, and electron microscopy.
