Grants Further Solidify Center's Mission
Several Lupus Center physician-researchers recently secured funding for important research into the causes and far-reaching effects of lupus. Recent awards include:
Kathleen McKinnon, DO -- Advanced Glycation End Products in SLE: A "Lupus Factor" for CVD? (National Institutes of Health K23)
Chau-Ching Liu, MD, PhD -- Lymphocyte-Bound Complement Activation Products: Clues to SLE Pathogenesis (National Institutes of Health R01)
Joseph Ahearn, MD (with Hermine Brunner, MD, of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center) -- Biomarkers for Diagnosis, Monitoring and Prognosis in Pediatric SLE (Lupus Foundation of America)
Amy Kao, MD, MPH -- C4d on Circulating Cells and Renal Tissue as Markers of Lupus Nephritis (Lupus Foundation of America)
In addition, Kelly Shields, PhD, has been awarded a post-doctoral position in the NIH T32-supported Cardiovascular Epidemiology Training Program. She will be mentored by Susan Manzi, MD, MPH, in the study "Influence of Peri-vascular Adipose on Atherosclerosis."
Cellatope Corporation
Cellatope Corporation (formerly StageMark Inc.) is a cell analysis company that is developing research and diagnostic products and services in the field of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases with an initial focus on lupus. The company's technology platform — cell-bound complement activation products (CB-CAPs) — is the subject of an exclusive, world-wide license from the University of Pittsburgh (UPITT) and is based on pioneering research by Drs. Joseph Ahearn and Susan Manzi, co-directors of the Lupus Center of Excellence.
